What is the Body Mass Index Calculator, and how does it actually work?
A Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculator is a digital screening tool that helps estimate a person’s body fat based on their height and weight. It provides a numerical value that helps put you into a health category.
The formula is to take your weight in kilograms and divide it by the square of your height in centimetres. In case you use measurements in pounds, you can use the Imperial method. The result is then compared to standardised weight status categories.

Understanding what your BMI results mean
Once you get your number, you will fall into one of these categories established by the World Health Organisation.
- Below 18.5 = Underweight. It indicated you need to gain weight for better immunity and energy.
- 18.5 – 24.9: Healthy Weight Range. Indicated normal weight, encourages maintenance of a healthy lifestyle.
- 25.0 – 29.9: Overweight. Indicates higher body fat than the ideal range, increased risk of illnesses.
- 30.0 and Above: Obese. Indicates a very high amount of body fat, high risk of chronic diseases.
While this gives you an overview, it is important to remember that this is not a definitive diagnosis of individual health.
What are the limitations and benefits?
The limitations:
- Ignores muscle mass: BMI cannot distinguish between muscle mass and body fat. In some individuals, because of heavy workouts, the muscle mass increases, which causes high body weight.
- No context: it does not state where the fat is stored; for example, visceral fat (fat around organs) is very dangerous. It does not consider factors like age, bone density, pregnancy, etc.
- Ignores ethnic differences: Different ethnic groups have different body compositions because of their geographical background. Some may have high health risks with a lower fat percentage.

What is considered a healthy weight range for adults and for children?
For Adults:
A healthy weight range for adults is 18.4 - 24.9. However, considering this range can be misleading because body composition for everyone is different. It is important to consider other metrics like blood pressure, bone density, and muscle mass.
For Children:
Metrics for children are different because they are always growing. For them BMI percentile is used. 5th to 85th percentile is considered healthy based on their age and height.
